Imitation from the Persian
By Dr. Southey
LORD! who art merciful as well as just, 1
Incline thine ear to me, a child of dust! 2
Not what I would, O Lord! I offer thee, 3
Alas! but what I can. 4
Father Almighty, who hast made me man, 5
And bade me look to Heaven, for thou art there, 6
Accept my sacrifice and humble prayer. 7
Four things which are not in thy treasury, 8
I lay before thee, Lord, with this petition: — 9
My nothingness, my wants, 10
My sins, and my contrition! 11
